Hanoi (VNA) – New Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad on May 14 announced a scheme to revamp the country’s anti-corruption agency while affirming his determination to investigate all alleged crimes committed by the previous government.

The PM told the press on May 14 that he will appoint new heads of the anti-corruption agency and the Justice Ministry, saying he hopes to finalise key positions of the new Cabinet this week.

The leader also instructed Malaysian agencies not to take out or destroy documents to facilitate investigations when necessary. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance was asked to review the budget in order to reduce the government expenses.

Since he was sworn in as Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Mahathir announced the list of heads of three out of ten key ministries in the Cabinet, comprising the Ministries of Home Affairs, Defence and Finance.

Mahathir Mohamad was officially sworn in as Prime Minister of Malaysia on May 10 after a shock election victory, 15 years after he stood down. The 92-year-old man, who had governed for more than two decades, became the world's oldest elected leader.

He came out of retirement and defected to the opposition to take on and beat former protege Najib Razak. His historic win ousted the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, which has been in power since independence in 1957.

Official results showed that Mahathir's Pakatan Harapan (Alliance of Hope) had won 113 of the parliament's 222 seats, exceeding the simple majority required to rule.

Meanwhile, the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional headed by former Prime Minister Najib Razak won only 79 seats.
