Mekong Deltaprovinces and cities need to apply advanced technology in agriculture,human resources training, e-government and climate-change adaptation, expertssaid at a conference held in Vinh Long province on August 29. 

More than 700 delegates, includingrepresentatives of 55 businesses from the information technology andcommunication (ICT) sector across the country took part in the 22nd Vietnam ICTDevelopment Conference.

With the theme “Industrial Revolution 4.0 - Opportunitiesfor the Mekong Delta”, the conference focused on building e-government andadapting to climate change under the guidelines and orientation of the Partyand State. 

Nguyen Thanh Hung, Deputy Minister ofInformation and Communications, said the Mekong Delta is the country’s biggestgranary and a major economic centre with key products such as seafood, fruitsand farm produce. 

The region also has great potential for rivertourism and the processing industry, he said, adding that some areas have nottapped their potential, including healthcare, education and high-quality humanresources. 

The region is facing challenges related toclimate change, including rising sea levels and severe salinity. Research andapplication of IT is inevitable for the country, especially the Mekong Delta,he told the media.

The conference also acts as a forum forpolicymakers, managers and experts to share experiences and createopportunities for cooperation in the field of ICT. 

Nguyen Van Quang, Vice Secretary of theprovincial Party Committee, who is also chairman of the provincial People’sCommittee, said the promotion of IT application helped Vinh Long provinceimprove administration at all levels and further administrative reform, as wellas improve the investment environment.

He said through the event, the province wasexpected to develop guidelines and policies for ICT development, contributingto e-government and climate change adaptation. 

The Ministry of Information and Communications plannedto develop a national programme to shift to digitalisation, he said. 

Speeding up the digital transformation processis an important step for Vietnam to realise opportunities offered by the fourthindustrial revolution, he said. 

At the conference, a representative of theGovernment Office introduced the e-government building programme in the 2018-2020period with a vision to 2025.

On the sidelines of the conference, an ICTexhibition was held with the participation of 24 leading ICT companies.-VNA
