Mekong Delta rice exports up 7.8 percent in 2012

The Mekong Delta region is expected to export 6.9 million tonnes of rice in 2012, a year-on-year increase of 7.8 percent.

The figure is equivalent to 89.6 percent of the country’s total rice exports.

In the first 10 days of December, the region exported 180,000 tonnes of the grain, elevating total exports of the product to 6.6 million tones, worth 3.5 billion USD - the highest export value to date.

From now until the end of 2012, an additional 386,000 tonnes of rice will be shipped.

The region has boosted exports to Indonesia , China , the Philippines and Africa, and increased the export of high-quality rice to the EU, the US and the Middle East .

Farmers in the region have three consecutive bumper crops with an estimated output of 24.6 million tonnes, an increase of 1.1 million tones from 2011.

Vietnam’s 2012 rice exports will reach at least 7.65 million tonnes, a record volume, said the Vietnam Food Association (VFA) at a recent meeting in Ho Chi Minh City./.
