More than 2,000 poor women from the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho have enhanced their capacities to run a business as a result of the “Economic Empowerment of Women Entrepreneurs” programme.

The programme is being carried out by Save the Children in Vietnam and sponsored by the Chevron Corporation, one of the world’s leading energy companies.

The organisation has helped local women improve their income by enabling them to gain access to financial and technical services, as well as given instructions on how to develop business in a sustainable manner.

It has also organised a number of training courses on business and financial management skills, and raised local awareness of regular thrift practices, said Nguyen Van Gia – a representative from the organisation.

Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Hung Dung said the programme has helped improve the living standards of women in the city and the delta and reduce the rate of poor households from 13.23 percent in 2010 to 6.44 percent in 2013.-VNA
