Minister inspects IUU fishing prevention, control measures in Ba Ria-Vung Tau

A delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) led by Minister Le Minh Hoan on April 8 visited the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau to inspect the implementation of policies regarding illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing prevention and control.

Ba Ria – Vung Tau (VNA) – A delegation from theMinistry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) led by Minister Le MinhHoan on April 8 visited the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau to inspect theimplementation of policies regarding illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU)fishing prevention and control.

In a working session with the provincial People’s Committee,Minister Hoan asked the locality to strengthen measures against IUU fishing, especially from now until May 2024, while reviewing recommendationsfrom the European Commission (EC) for better performance, aiming to boost the green andsustainable growth of the fisheries industry.

Stressing that all actions must focus on maintainingVietnamese aquatic resources for present and future generations, theofficial underlined the need to strengthen communications to enhance publicawareness and responsibility in the field.

Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Van Tho affirmed that BaRia-Vung Tau will work hard to roll out more solutions to prevent and fight IUUfishing, as well as joining hands with the whole country to remove the EC’s yellow card inits next examination.

According to Vice Chairman of the committee Nguyen Cong Vinh, as of the end ofMarch, 60.9% of the local fleet were offshore fishing vessels, while 96.82% ofthe fishing vessels  with a length from 15m have been equipped with a vessel monitoring system.

Currently, 96.09% of the local fleet have received offshorefishing licences, he added.

Over the years, local authorities have closely controlledseafood in ports, detecting 55 cases of violating fishing regulations.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau hasn't recorded a single vessel violating foreignwaters since August of last year.

Earlier, Minister Hoan visited local fishermen and seafood processing firms,and toured fishing ports in Vung Tau city./.

K’Ho ethnic minority group in Lam Dong province looks forward to Election Day

Vietnam Coast Guard Region 2 intensifies efforts to help remove IUU fishing “yellow card”

According to Colonel Truong Ba Long, Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Vietnam Coast Guard Region 2 Command, the close integration of efforts to combat IUU fishing with routine patrol and control activities to safeguard maritime sovereignty, prevent smuggling and trade fraud, fight drug-related crimes, and conduct search and rescue operations constitutes a regular task of the unit.

Hanoi customs seize suspected gold smuggled by four passengers at Noi Bai airport

The inspection revealed that passenger P.T.H. had concealed 10 pieces of the metal, weighing about 5 kg, inside her bra and underwear. Passenger V.T.M. hid five pieces totalking roughly 1.1 kg beneath underwear. Passenger N.V.L. concealed nine pieces amounting to around 3.5 kg, while passenger C.S.M.H. hid seven pieces weighing some 2.7 kg under underwear and on the wrist.
