Myanmar has made an appeal for international help for the country’s flood victims whose lives have been seriously affected by the disaster over the past month.

In a statement on August 4, Speaker of the Union Parliament and House of Representatives Thura U Shwe Mann stressed that the urgent assistance from the international community is needed to save lives and prevent further aftermath of the flooding.

He also highly valued flood relief initiatives from the United Nations, non-governmental organisations and civil societies, including an appeal for emergency help to Myanmar flood victims run on the White House website.

Heavy seasonal downpour, slashing the Southeast Asian country since late June, has triggered severe floods that killed more than 60 local people and affected over 210,000 others in 12 regions and states across the nation while about 6,000 households were moved to relief camps.

It is estimated that nearly 344,500 hectares of farmlands were submerged by the floods.-VNA
