Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman met his Myanmar counterpart U Wunna Maung Lwin in Myanmar’s capital, Nay Pyi Taw on May 21 to discuss solutions to the illegal migration wave at sea, according to Bernama news agency.
The Malaysian Foreign Minister was quoted by Bernama as saying that Minister U Wunna told him Myanmar is willing to cooperate fully with Malaysia as the current ASEAN chair, to resolve the crisis.
For his part, Anifah said he had sought assurance from the Myanmar government that it would help to tackle the issue, stressing Myanmar ’s role in identifying the root of the problem and solving it.
On the same day, the Myanmar President U Thein Sein discussed the same issue with the US Deputy Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, who was paying a working visit to Nay Pyi Taw, according to Malaysian Minister of Information U Ye Htut.
Blinken said the US will deliver humanitarian aid to the migrants at sea. He also stressed that Myanmar should deal with the problem at its root.
Myanmar officials said the country will aid those who are their citizens and repatriate them. A government delegation will attend a meeting on the crisis in the Thai capital of Bangkok on May 29 with the expected participation of 18 countries and three organisations.
Those meetings took place as thousands of Bangladeshis and Rohingya ethnics from Myanmar remain stranded at sea in unsafe vessels with the intention of landing in Indonesia , Malaysia and Thailand.
On May 20, the foreign ministers of Malaysia , Indonesia and Thailand agreed on temporary solutions to deal with the wave of migrants reaching their shores at a meeting in Malaysia.
They called on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to play an active role in dealing with the problem promptly and effectively.-VNA
