Myanmar: NLD wins 77.04 percent of parliamentary seats

Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar’s opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) secured 886 seats or 77.04 percent at three levels of the parliament, the Union Election Commission (UEC) released final results of the general election on November 20.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s party garnered 255 seats in the House of Representatives (Lower House), 135 in the House of Nationalities (Upper House) and 496 others in the Region or State Parliament.

Meanwhile, the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) held 118 seats, accounting for 10 percent of the total figure, including 30 seats in the House of Representatives, 12 in the House of Nationalities and 76 in the Region or State Parliament.

The remaining seats mainly belonged to some ethnic parties and five independent runners.

According to Myanmar’s Constitution, the NLD is eligible to set up an independent government and hold the chairmanship of both the lower and upper houses. It is also able to nominate two vice presidential candidates.

The current government’s term will terminate in March, 2016. Presidential election is slated for February, 2016.

Under Myanmar’s Constitution adopted in 2008, 25 percent of all parliamentary seats are reserved for military appointees.

Of the total 1,150 representatives elected at the general election on November 8, 323 went to the House of Representatives, 168 to the House of Nationalities and 659 to the Region or State Parliament.-VNA
