Myanmar President U Thein Sein reaffirmed the government's commitment to achieving peace, promoting economic development and building a better future for the next generation on November 5.
In a monthly speech to the nation, he said the five-party roundtable talks, including representatives of the government, parliament, political parties, army and the election commission, were held for the first time on October 31.
During the talks, the President proposed three main agendas, including continuation of democratic transition and political process, ways to strengthen the peace process for national reconciliation, and ways to hold the 2015 election.
The participants discussed solutions for political issues through political means, constitutional amendment, trust building among the groups for reform process, the signing of a nationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA) at the end of 2014 or in early 2015, the framework for further political dialogue before the 2015 election, and how to hold the vote in a free and fair manner among others.
The President said that with a nationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA) signed, a code of conduct can be established that will have to be followed by both sides, thus helping lower the number of clashes and reduce hostilities.
He believed that success achieved in the peace process can be a basis for national reconciliation and the 2015 general election as well which is critical for democratic transition.-VNA
