Myanmar President U Thein Sein vowed further acts to achieve internal peace and improve local lives in his monthly radio speech to the nation on May 1.
He described the finalisation of the first draft of a nationwide ceasefire agreement between the government and armed ethnic groups on April 8 as a step closer to peace, adding that it can be signed soon.
The leader also promised all necessary preparations for holding a political dialogue to resolve armed conflicts.
Touching on March violence in the western state of Rakhine, he said such acts are unacceptable and violators must bear the full brunt of the law.
To prevent similar issues from escalating into violence in the future, he urged relevant agencies to work closely with the Emergency Coordination Centre, including government members, international organisations and representatives of civil groups.
According to observers, if the two sides can reach a consensus in the next negotiations, Myanmar is likely to escape the civil war that has plagued it for the past six decades.-VNA
