Myanmar State Counselor visits Japan to call for investment

Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar’s State Counselor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi arrived in Japan on November 1 for a five-day official visit.

This is Suu Kyi’s first visit to Japan after the new government took office in March this year.

Suu Kyi is scheduled to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and a group of Japanese businesses.

She is also scheduled to visit Kyoto, where she spent time in the 1980s studying the life of her father, revolutionary leader Aung San.

The Japan visit is part of a series of foreign trips that Suu Kyi has made to advertise Myanmar as a destination for investors. She previously visited China, the US and India.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry reported that in the 2014 fiscal year ending in March 2015, Japan's direct investment in Myanmar hit 86 million USD.

Myanmar’s export to Japan reached 513 million USD, mainly apparels, farm produce while its import from Japan was valued at 1.3 billion USD, mainly cars and machineries.-VNA
