Hanoi (VNA) – Thousands of people in Myanmar marched in Yangon city on October 29 to support the country’s military, which has come under criticism for its heavy handedness in dealing with Rohingya Muslims.

More than 2,000 army supporters, including Buddhist nationalists and monks, took part in the march. A senior Buddhist nationalist monk was quoted by foreign media as saying that only if the military is strengthened will Myanmar’s sovereignty be secured.

A series of attacks on police outposts were launched in northern Rakhine state in August, which the Myanmar Government said was carried out by a Rohingya insurgent group.

About 600,000 Rohingya people fled the northern state for the neighbouring country of Bangladesh after Myanmar’s forces began a security campaign in Rakhine after the attacks.-VNA
