Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – The National Taekwondo Championship 2021 kicked off in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on December 16, with the participation of 250 martial artists from 25 provinces and cities, and sectors.

Director of the Thua Thien-Hue Department of Culture and Sports Phan Thanh Hai said the tournament opened up a chance for competitors to sharpen their skills and helped to assess training of athletes from localities after a social distancing period triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It also aims to select outstanding martial artists who will join training sessions ahead of regional and international tourneys, notably the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) hosted by Vietnam next year.

Stringent COVID-19 preventive measures have been in place to ensure safety for the participants, who are required to be fully vaccinated against and tested negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours.

The tournament will run until December 20./.

Vietnam team ranks third at Wushu Taolu Asian Cup 2025

The standout achievement came in the Sanda (combat) events, where Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy and Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hien claimed gold medals after impressive victories over opponents from China and Hong Kong (China), respectively. Thu Thuy edged out Zhang Xiaoyu in the 60kg category with a 2-1 win, while Ngoc Hien dominated her 56kg bout 2-0.
