Indonesian President Joko Widodo inaugurated General Gatot Nurmantyo asthe new Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) in Jakarta onJuly 8.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace in central Jakarta.

In his oath, Gatot Nurmantyo, succeeding Moeldoko, whose term ends onAugust 1, pledged to take on the role of the head of the TNI inaccordance with the 1945 Constitution.

Theappointment of Gatot Nurmantyo, a former army chief of staff, as the TNICommander was said to break the longstanding tradition of the postrotating between the chiefs of the Army, Navy and Air Force.Accordingly, the position should have been taken by the chief of the AirForce.

President Widodo said he chose Gatot Nurmantyo with a view to strengthening the military organisation.

On the same day, former Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso was inaugurated as the head of the Indonesian Intelligence Agency.-VNA
