The Party and the State always give a lot of attention to residents in the north-western mountainous region, President Truong Tan Sang said on April 12 during a visit to Son La province which lies 320km away from Hanoi.
The State leader said he appreciated what indigenous people have done for the construction of the biggest hydro-power plant in Southeast Asia .
Thousands of families abandoned their homes and moved to resettlement areas for development of the Son La hydro-power plant, which started construction in late 2006.
Four of the total six turbines for the 2,400 MW plant have been operational and the final two are expected to be ready by the end of this year, three years ahead of schedule.
The president efforts will “contribute a big part to the country’s development,” said the president.
Once completed, the 2.78 billion USD plant will be capable of generating 10,227 billion kWh of electricity a year on average.
The also asked the project’s management board to maintain the plant’s construction quality and to help the local people soon resettle into their new homes in Muong La district.
Sang also visited Son La Rubber JSC and Phieng Bung 1 Village, where many local people now work and live after sacrificing their land for the plant.
Admitting that the new lives of many families are still very harsh, Sang requested the local government to create more favourable conditions for the people to improve their living standards.-VNA
