Quang Binh (VNA) – The central coastalprovince of Quang Binh has disbursed over 2 trillion VND (87.8 million USD),mostly sourced from the central budget, to support fishermen in 60 out of the62 communes affected by the marine environmental incident last year.

The prompt compensation and assistance have helpedlocal people soon stabilise their lives and resume production and business.

However, there are still difficulties incompleting necessary procedures to deal with inventory seafood, and helpingfishermen with fishery breeding.

The province strives to complete thecompensation for fishermen in June 2017 by creating public consensus inimplementing the Party and State policy to address the issue, as well as assignspecific tasks for local relevant departments and agencies.

Operations of Hung Nghiep Formosa Ha Tinh SteelCo. Ltd resulted in mass fish deaths along the coast of the central provincesof Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien-Hue in April 2016.

The pollution damaged about 400 hectares ofcoral and affected over 260,000 people who earned their living in sea-relatedactivities.

The firm compensated over 11.5 trillion VND (500million USD) to support local fishermen switch to other jobs and recover thepolluted maritime environment. It also vowed to deal with shortcomings in wasteand wastewater treatment.-VNA
