Eleven thousand soldiers marching in unison to a military band as huge banners reading "May 9" decorating the Kremlin's walls, along with 68 military aircraft and helicopters flying above Red Square in Russia on May 9 marked the 68th anniversary of the former Soviet Union's victory in the Great Patriotic War.
The parade is part of various solemn activities held annually in the country to commemorate the capitulation of Nazi Germany on May 9, 1945, which remains a significant event in the Russian calendar.
This year’s event saw the attendance of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
At the opening ceremony of the parade, Putin said that the country will do everything to strengthen security on the planet and the former Soviet Union's great triumph in preventing fascism will forever be honoured.
In order to achieve the great victory, the country lost an estimated 27 million people defending its territory and the Eastern Front. Also on the occasion, the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation will organise firework performances in heroic cities such as Moscow, St. Petersburg and Tula.-VNA
