Philippines welcomes 100 millionth citizen

The Philippines, the 12th most populous country in the world, welcomed its 100 millionth citizen on July 27 morning, who is a baby girl named Jennalyn Sentino.

Head of the country’sCommission on Population Juan Antonio Perez said the milestone of 100million presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly whenaround one quarter of the population are living in poverty.

He said the country is seeking ways to bring social services to poorpeople and reduce the fertility rate down to two per woman from thecurrent three.

In April this year, a law onreproductive health came into effect providing the poor with birthcontrol services. Thanks to the law, an estimated 2-3 million Philippinewomen will have access to family planning methods.-VNA

Thailand’s business activity shows signs of gradual recovery

As of August 31, Thailand had more than 1 million active legal entities with total registered capital of 24.13 trillion THB. The service sector accounted for the largest share, with 552,830 entities, or 54.48%, followed by wholesale and retail with 332,791 entities (32.79%) and manufacturing with 129,215 (12.73%).
