A project to develop a complex dedicated to the Ho Chi Minh Trail at Sea was launched on January 17 in Thanh Hai commune, Thanh Phu district, Ben Tre province.
Attending the launch ceremony were former President Nguyen Minh Triet, former Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong and former Vice President Truong My Hoa.
The three-phase project will complete in 2030 at a cost of 1.5 trillion VND. It will cover an area of 630 hectares in Thanh Hai and Thanh Phong communes - home to 5,500 people.
The first phase of the project, with 82.2 billion VND from the State budget, will conclude in three years.
The highlight of the final complex will be a 13.6 metre monument to commemorate the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail at Sea.
During the war against the US, Thanh Hai commune, code name A 101 Port, received weapons transported from the north. It was recognised as a national relic in 1995.
Since its establishment on October 23, 1961, the Ho Chi Minh Trail at Sea has supported hundreds of ships carrying weapons, goods, medicine, cadres and soldiers, moving them from the north to the frontline, and directly contributing to the defeat of the US and liberation in the south, reunifying the country.-VNA
