Quang Ngai restores Cor traditional houses

The Tra Bong district in the central province of Quang Ngai has invested 2.7 billion VND (125,000 USD) to restore a traditional house of the Cor ethnic group, according to Head of the district’s office Phung Tan Nho.

The stilt house covers 105 square metres and consists of 16poles, one communal living compartment, two bedrooms, and two kitchens.

The construction, part of a project on the preservation andpromotion of traditional cultural values of the Cor ethnic group from2011-2020, is expected to be completed in June.

The Corbelong to the Mon-Khmer group and have a population of almost 30,000,having settled primarily in central Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces.

They live mainly on slash-and-burn agriculture, growing rice, maize, cassavas and other plants in newly cleared areas.

The Cor lived in raised houses large enough to accommodate extendedfamilies. In recent years, the ethnic majority population has begunshifting to smaller, ground-based homes.

Cor ethnic people inTra Bong district are one of the few ethnic minority groups in theprovince with specific preserved traditional culture, including musicalinstruments and gongs, traditional clothes and jewellery, and tools fordaily life.-VNA

Vietnamese puppetry seeks renewal amid preservation challenges

People’s Artist Nguyen Hoang Tuan, Chairman of the Hanoi Theatre Association, noted that while northern Vietnam had 27 puppetry guilds in 1986, only 14 remain today. Many traditional plays and original scripts have been lost, hurting restoration and preservation efforts.

Project on digital transformation in cultural sector approved

By 2030, the project targets the establishment of shared digital platforms across 100% of cultural sectors. All digitised cultural heritage will be standardised under the national data framework and shared in accordance with regulations, while 80% of public digital heritage assets are expected to receive digital identifiers to clarify ownership and management, encouraging organisations and individuals to do the same and support market development.
