A conference of writers from Vietnam , Laos and Cambodia and a ceremony to present the fourth Mekong River Literature Awards took place in the central city of Da Nang on Sept. 11.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Lao and Cambodian counterparts, Thongsing Thammavong and Hun Sen, sent greeting messages to the event.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Vice President of the Vietnam Writers’ Association Le Quang Trang, who led the Vietnamese delegation to the conference, described regional people who love peace, cooperation and friendship as a source of inspiration for literary works.
A cooperative mechanism formed for the three writers’ associations has encouraged the organisation of literary activities and creation of initiatives in the field, it was said.
The mechanism has enabled Vietnamese writers making visits to the old battlefields in Laos and Cambodia and their peers from the two neighbouring countries taking part in various literary activities in Vietnam .
The conference, the fourth of its kind, which is held every two years in rotation in the three countries, saw the presence of new friends from the Thai Writers’ Association and the India-Vietnam Friendship Association.
Participants agreed that integration and comprehensive cooperation are offering chances for more cultural exchanges.
They pledged to help bring their cultures closer through translated literary works, particularly that from the winners of the Mekong River Literature Awards.
They proposed the expansion of the Mekong River Literature Awards mechanism to enable the participation of writers from country members of the Mekong River Commission.
