The Foreigner Policy Committee of the Republic of Korea (RoK) on November 28 passed a plan that tightens the policy on marriage visas for foreign women and slashes regulations for asylum-seekers.

The amended law stipulates that a groom must invite his foreign future-bride to the RoK to familiarise herself with local living conditions and his family circumstances.

In addition, a command of Korean is compulsory for any foreign woman wanting to marry a RoK man.

According to the committee, which is under the Prime Minister’s Office, the government plans to implement the amended immigration law from 2014.

The online entry visa processing system for researchers, scholars and skilled individuals will take effect in January 2013.

Family members and friends accompanying relatives to RoK for treatment will require tourist visa.-VNA
