The Republic of Korea (RoK)’s government announced on March 13 that the country will provide marine research technologies to developing countries in the Southeast Asian region, including Vietnam to help prevent maritime accidents.
According to the RoK’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, a group of 16 government officials from Cambodia, Timor Leste, the Philippines and Vietnam will arrive in the RoK for a month-long training course on measuring the depth of water and drawing an ocean map.
These technologies may help preclude marine accidents that are frequent in developing countries due to their lack of ocean maps, said an official from the ministry.
As part of the country’s support activities for developing countries, the RoK organises several similar courses every year, covering such issues as earthquake-induced tsunamis and rip currents, as well as ways to minimise damages from such catastrophic events.-VNA
