Hanoi (VNA) – A Vietnamese Film Week will be introduced for the first time at World Expo 2020 Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from December 30 to January 5, 2022.
The week, among a series of events to celebrate Vietnam Day within the framework of the exhibition, is organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) in coordination with the Department of International Cooperation, Department of Cinema, Vietnam Association for Cinema Promotion and Development, Netflix, Inc. and some Vietnamese film enterprises.
The films to be shown include Bo Gia (Dad, I’m sorry), Hai Phuong (Furie), Cha Cong Con (Father and son), Mat Biec (Dreamy Eyes), Cuoc Doi Cua Yen (Yen’s life), Co Ba Sai Gon (The Tailor), and Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh (Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass).
Of these, Mat Biec and Bo Gia won the Golden and Silver Lotus Award at the 22nd Vietnam Film Festival.
Released in 2019, Mat Biec has led the Vietnamese box office for 18 consecutive days, equaling the record of the global blockbuster Avengers: End Game when it was screened in Vietnam. The revenue of the film reached more than 172 billion VND (7.6 million USD), ranking second in the list of the most popular Vietnamese films of all time.
Bo Gia tells the story of a family living in a poor hamlet in HCM City. It is the touching story of family love, as well as the conflicting plots between characters, that helped the film evoke sympathy and receive many positive responses from the audience.
Developed from the popular web drama of the same name in early 2020, the film earned 420 billion VND (18.5 million USD) and became the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time. When released in the US, the film continued to surprise fans when it grossed over a million US dollars.
Cuoc Doi cua Yen and Cha Cong Con have won many awards at international film festivals such as the 9th World Premiere Film Festival in the Philippines, Arizona International Film Festival 2017 and Asian Film Festival Barcelona 2019. Hai Phuong received the Best Action Film award at the New York Asian Film Festival 2019.
The other films to be screened during the week were either nominated for the pre-qualification round of Oscar's in the Foreign Film category or in the list of the top Vietnamese box office in Vietnam.
Nguyen Phuong Hoa, director general of the Department of International Cooperation under the MCST, said the screening of these films will help elevate the image of Vietnam – a peaceful and dynamic country that attaches great importance to preserving the national identity and upholding the values of humanity.
Vietnamese films will be screened with both English and Arabic subtitles.
In addition to Vietnamese film week, Vietnam Day will feature diverse activities such as a parade, an art programme, and the screening of a video clip about the legend of Lac Long Quan and Au Co who were believed to be the ancestors of the Vietnamese nation.
EXPO 2020 Dubai had welcomed more than 6.3 million visitors as of mid-December, with over 10,000 events organised in October and November alone./.
