Hanoi (VNA) – The Government of Singapore has taken a number of tough measures to reduce the use of automobiles and traffic jam.
The country has applied road tolls, massive spending on public transport, and a licence fee that bumps the cost of an average vehicle to 80,000 USD.
The main tool is the certificate of entitlement or COE. The current cost of a COE is almost 50,000 SGD (37,000 USD). The certificates are valid for 10 years, after that the car will be scrapped or the certificate must be renewed.
Other key measures include controlling the number of vehicles on the roads and charging tolls on main roads at busy times.
The Singapore’s Government recently announced a plan to spend 28 billion SGD upgrading its public transport network including subways, trains and buses.-VNA
