Singapore (VNA) – The Elections Department (ELD) of Singapore recently announced that the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) was set up.

Its formation is a clear sign that Singapore’s general election, which must be held by April 2021, is near.

The EBRC has been directed to review the boundaries of the current electoral divisions and to recommend the number and boundaries of Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) and Single Member Constituencies (SMCs), considering significant changes in the number of electors in the current electoral divisions as a result of population shifts and housing developments.

It will also look into further reducing the average size of the GRCs, which currently numbers 16, and to increase the number of SMCs from the current 13.

Analysts predicted that Singapore’s general election may take place in December, while some others said it could be held in April or May next year after the country’s national budget is unveiled.

In Singapore’s previous elections, a general election could be called from between two and seven months from the time the EBRC's formation is announced.

This is the first time that the ELD has officially announced the establishment of the EBRC. The announcement was made by ministers before the parliament in 2006 and 2015 elections, and by PM Lee when speaking with reporters in 2011.-VNA
