Hanoi (VNA) - Singapore has proposed new measures to fight fake news.

A new bill submitted to parliament on April 1 requires websites to publish warnings or corrections on posts it considers false and remove them.

According to Singaporean Law Minister K. Shanmugam, this bill focuses on false statements of facts. It doesn't deal with opinions and viewpoints.

The Ministry said criminal sanctions will only be imposed if the falsehoods are spread by malicious actors who undermine society.

Those who use fake online accounts or spread false information in Singapore can face up to 10 years in prison. Meanwhile, the maximum fine is 1 million SGD (740,000 USD).

The move came two days after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg called on governments to play a more active role in monitoring online platforms. - VNA
