Singapore has decided to build another passenger terminal at Changi Airport, announced Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew this week.
Singapore’s fifth airport terminal will be ready in the next decade and details on the facility are expected at the end of this year, he added.
He urged Changi Airport to capture Singapore’s share of the growing pie and to cement its position as a leading aviation hub.
Observers believe that the new terminal will most likely be the airport’s biggest one that will be capable of handling between 30 and 50 million passengers a year.
Master-planning for Terminal 4 began in 2008, two months after Terminal 3 opened. Construction of the terminal, with a planned capacity of 16 million passenger movements a year, will begin this year and is slated to be completed in 2017.
Last year, Changi Airport handled more than 50 million passengers for the first time in its 31-year history. In the first quarter of 2013, it served 13.05 million passenger movements, an increase of 6.2 per cent over the same period last year.-VNA
