Singapore (VNA) - Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on September 5 announced the nomination of Social and Family Development Minister Tan Chuan-Jin as the new speaker of the parliament to replace former speaker Halimah Yacob.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, PM Lee’s decision received the support of all parliamentarians from the People's Action Party (PAP) that holds the majority of seats in the parliament.
Tan is poised to become Singapore's 10th parliament speaker on September 11 when the house convenes.
Earlier on August 7, former speaker Halimah Yacob resigned to take part in the upcoming presidential election.-VNA
