Singapore’s unemployment rises in 2014

Singapore has undergone the fourth consecutive year of unemployment escalation, spurred by the nation’s economic restructuring, announced the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on April 23.

According to theMOM’s report, 13,000 people in Singapore lost jobs in 2014, comparedwith 11,560 in 2013. However, unemployment rate among Singaporeancitizens dipped against 2013.

The result was buoyed by the staffredundancies in most service enterprises, which are under restructuringfor greater work efficiency.

Unemployment was also recorded in the construction sector due to the decline in private building productivity.

Professionals,managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) were once again the mostvulnerable to layoffs, accounting for 51 percent of the totalunemployment.

However, the MOM said that number of redundantemployees, likely to be back in work six months later, increased inthree consecutive quarters, up to 59 percent in December 2014.-VNA

Malaysia's layoffs rise 47% in first quarter

The report, based on figures from Malaysia’s Social Security Organisation, showed layoffs peaked in January with around 10,700 cases before easing to 7,500 in February and 5,900 in March. Despite the slowdown toward the end of the quarter, the total remained significantly higher than the roughly 16,500 layoffs recorded in the same period of 2025.
