The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on June 21 added eight natural sites to the World Heritage List during its ongoing 37th session in Cambodia.
The newly recognised locations include China’s Mount Tianshan, the Pamirs mountains in Tajikistan, the Namib Sand Sea in Namibia , the Hill Forts of Rajasthan in India and Italy's Mount Etna among others.
Mount Etna - the highest and the largest active volcano in Europe and the Mediterranean area - is located in north-eastern Sicily Island , in the south of Italy.
The mount has one of the longest documented histories in volcanology and thus has outstanding universal value.
The Namib Sand Sea is the only coastal desert named on the list. It is a place of outstanding natural beauty where atmospheric conditions provide exceptional visibility of the landscape by day.
During the 10-day event, UNESCO will consider inscribing 31 new properties on the list.-VNA
