Hanoi (VNS/VNA) – The Directorate for Roads of Vietnam  (DRVN) has proposed the Ministry of Transport increase the maximum speed on 4-lane expressways to 90km per hour from 80km per hour.

Roads eligible to increase the maximum operating speed to 90km per hour include My Thuan Bridge 2, My Thuan-Can Tho, Trung Luong-My Thuan and Tuyen Quang-Phu Tho.

Recently, DRVN has reported to the Ministry of Transport on the work of posting maximum speed limit signs on limited access highways with four motor vehicle lanes.

Since late December last year, there have been four sections of the four-lane limited access highway being permitted a maximum speed from 80km to 90km per hour, including My Thuan Bridge 2, My Thuan-Can Tho, Trung Luong-My Thuan and Tuyen Quang-Phu Tho expressways, said DRVN.

According to reports from the Project Management Boards (PMUs) and the departments of transport managing the expressways, after a period of exploitation and monitoring, traffic is initially stable.

To ensure uniformity, DRVN proposed the Ministry of Transport allow the 4-lane limited access highways with a hard median divider to have maximum operating speed of 90km per hour.

The Ministry of Transport requested investors and PMUs to continue monitoring traffic organisation and safety on the route to promptly detect any problems and shortcomings so as to report to competent authorities to adjust the speed of operation and traffic organisation plans to ensure safe and smooth traffic.

PMUs, departments and investors of highways need to complete additional investments to enhance the work of ensuring traffic order and safety, including intelligent transportation systems (ITS) for the project of managing, operating and maintaining the transportation infrastructure.

Previously, DRVN also proposed the Ministry of Transport increase the maximum speed from 80km to 90km per hour for vehicles up to 30 passengers and trucks up to 3.5 tonnes on nine 4-lane expressways including Lao Cai-Kim Thanh, Cao Bo-Mai Son, Mai Son-Highway 45, Nghi Sơn-Highway 45, Nghi Son-Dien Chau, Nha Trang-Cam Lam, Cam Lam-Vinh Hao, Vinh Hao-Phan Thiet, and My Thuan-Can Tho./.
