Public support for Prime Minister Naoto Kan has increased after he defeated the former secretary – general of Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) Ichiro Ozawa in the race for the party’s presidency.
According to a survey by the “Japanese Economy”, the approval rate for PM Kan rose by 17 percent over August to 71 percent. Among his supporters, 81 percent explained that they did not want too fast a change in the political scene. If Kan had lost in the DPJ leadership contest, Ozawa would have become Japan ’s sixth Prime Minister within only four years.
Another survey by the “Asahi” daily showed Kan ’s support rate increased to 57 percent compared 49 percent early this month.
