Vietnam’s 17-year-old swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien broke the SEA Games record in the women’s 200m backstroke in 2 minutes and 14.80 seconds on December 12 at the ongoing SEA Games 27 in Myanmar.
The last record of this event was 2 minutes and 15.73 seconds.
Earlier, Vien also won a gold medal in the women’s 200m individual medley, which is the first ever that Vietnamese female swimmers recorded at SEA Games.
She will compete in six more events and is hoped to bag at least two more golds for Vietnam. Vien said that she will try her best to achieve as many gold medals as possible.
On the same day, Vietnamese cyclists secured the first medal with a bronze in the cross country cycling mixed-team relay event.
The achievement by Ha The Long, Nguyen Van Quang, Cao Thi Cam Le and Dinh Thi Nhu Quynh is deemed as a surprise since the team was not highly valued in this event.
At the end of December 12, Vietnam continues to rank second in the medal tally with 16 golds, following the host Myanmar (21 golds). Indonesia was placed third with 10 golds.-VNA
