Former Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Ba Hoan was sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Hanoi People’s Court on August 24.

The Supreme People’s Procuracy indictment said that from 2021 through May 2025, Hoan, then deputy minister in charge of the Department of Overseas Labour Management, allowed former Director General Tong Hai Nam to direct officials to create difficulties for companies during appraisal of license applications to send Vietnamese workers abroad.

The court sentenced former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Van Thang to four years in prison for "receiving bribes" under Article 354 of the Penal Code.

The case is linked to the investment projects for the construction of the second establishments of the Bach Mai Hospital and Viet Duc University Hospital (Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital).

The court imposed the heaviest sentences on two former VFA directors, namely Nguyen Thanh Phong, who receive 20 years in prison, and Tran Viet Nga, who was sentenced to 15 years. Two former deputy directors, Nguyen Hung Long and Do Huu Tuan, were given 12 years and seven years, respectively.

The Supreme People’s Procuracy has announced that its investigative agency has issued an indictment against Pham Tan Hoang, former Deputy Chief Justice of the High People’s Court in Da Nang (now the Appellate Court of the Supreme People’s Court in the city), on charges of “taking bribes” under Clause 2, Article 354 of the Penal Code.
