Amidst the ever-changing pace of modern life, the herbal scent in Cao residential group in Son Nam ward, northern province of Hung Yen, evokes traditional cultural values essential to Vietnamese families during the Lunar New Year. For the locals here, incense making is not merely a livelihood, but a rural memory preserved and passed down for over three centuries.

Arriving at Thuy Xuan village, around 7km to the southwest of the ancient imperial city of Hue, the first thing visitors notice will be giant colourful “bouquets” of incense sticks and the deep aroma of agarwood everywhere.

The two century old Cao village in the northern province of Hung Yen is one of the largest incense making villages in Vietnam.
