Health authorities attributed the increase partly to a shift in the dominant dengue virus strain from DENV-2 to DENV-3. Rapid urbanisation, favourable weather conditions, mosquito breeding sites and increased population mobility have also contributed to the spread of the disease.

While COVID-19 remains under control in Laos, dengue fever has continued to be an issue in the country, with 4,256 cases, including nine deaths, between January 1 and August 2.

Laos has recorded 2,037 cases of dengue fever, including five deaths, since last December, the country’s Ministry of Health said in a press release on June 23.

The Lao Ministry of Health has advised people across the country to clear potential mosquito breeding sites as the current outbreak of dengue fever has claimed 27 lives and more than 11,000 people have contracted the virus so far this year.
