By combining centuries-old craftsmanship with contemporary design, Hanoi’s traditional craft villages are finding new ways to keep their cultural heritage relevant and competitive in modern life.

ccording to the municipal Transport Construction Investment Project Management Board, the city is simultaneously implementing seven projects, namely Tu Lien, Ngoc Hoi, Tran Hung Dao, Thuong Cat, Van Phuc, Hong Ha and Me So bridges. Construction is being carried out on multiple fronts, focusing on bored piles, pile caps, piers and superstructure works.

Hanoi is home to more than 1,300 craft villages, accounting for roughly one-quarter of the national total.

Hanoi held a ceremony on February 14 to receive recognition for Bat Trang Ceramic Village in Gia Lam District and Van Phuc Silk Weaving Village in Ha Dong District as members of the World Craft Cities network. Bat Trang and Van Phuc craft villages are not only symbols of Vietnam’s traditional handicrafts but also produce artistic creations reflecting the skill and dedication of artisans.

Van Phuc Silk Village, along with Bat Trang Pottery Village, has been recognised as a member of the global Network of Creative Craft Cities at a recent ceremony in Hanoi. Despite historical fluctuations, Van Phuc silk weaving has endured for over ten centuries and continues to thrive as a renowned traditional craft of the imperial capital. Today, Van Phuc silk remains popular domestically and is also exported to numerous countries worldwide.

Vietnamese silk is highly valued in the world for its special qualities even though the country is not a global silk hub. International Silk Union Secretary General Fei Jianming agreed that “Vietnam’s silk industry has the best foundation among Southeast Asian nations with its thousand-year-old craft villages.

Brocade and silk products made by Vietnam’s northern craft villages are being displayed at an exhibition that opened in Seoul, the Republic of Korea on July 18.

Phat Tich Pagoda is located in Tien Du District, Bac Ninh Province. The pagoda is a historical and architectural sculpture and a unique art work left in Bac Ninh.
