As the rainy season begins in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau, water flows down from mountain streams, filling the terraced rice fields like giant mirrors reflecting the sky. Across the highlands, ethnic communities are busy preparing for a new farming season.
From mid-May to June, when summer rains begin to fall, the terraced rice fields in Mu Cang Chai district - formerly part of the northern province of Yen Bai, now under Lao Cai province after administrative merger - enter the water-pouring season.
