Vietnamese vegetables and fruits are eyeing various potential markets from Asia to Europe, and from the Middle East to North America and America, in which quality requirements and standards are high, prompting domestic exporters to work harder to conquer, said experts at a forum in Ho Chi Minh City on March 1.
Vietnam is working towards the target of exporting 7 million tonnes of rice this year, heard a forum held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) on November 19.
The agriculture ministry has devised measures to turn Vietnam into one of the world’s most 15 developed countries in terms of agriculture by 2030, and among the top 10 farm produce processing hubs.
Vietnam exported 107,000 tonnes of tea valued at 187 million USD during January-October, up 3.2 percent in volume and 14.3 percent in value year-on-year.
Vietnam shipped abroad 586,000 tonnes of rice in September for 251 million USD, pushing the total rice export volume and value in the first nine months of this year to 5.2 million tonnes and 2.24 billion USD, respectively.
Fruit and vegetable exports in the first eight months of this year fell by 5.8 percent year on year to about 2.53 billion USD, according to the Agro Processing and Market Development Department (Agrotrade) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The recent signing of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), which is expected to take effect from early 2020, has opened the door wider for Vietnamese farm produce to make inroads into the more than 500-million people strong market.
Export revenue of aquatic products in August was estimated at 833 million USD, bringing the result for the first eight months of this year to 5.52 billion USD, a drop of 1.2 percent over the same period last year.
