National Assembly (NA) Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue suggested reviewing provisions on water resources management, while addressing the 25th session of the NA Standing Committee in Hanoi on August 14 during which the draft revised Law on Water Resources is among the documents tabled for discussion.

Deputies of the 15th National Assembly (NA) are scheduled to vote to approve three laws and one resolution on June 20 as part of their ongoing fifth session.

The draft revised Law on Water Resources was submitted to legislators at the ongoing fifth session of the 15th National Assembly on May 25 afternoon.

Vietnam’s water demand is likely to reach about 122 billion cu.m each year from 2030, 1.5 times higher than the current amount, which means water shortage may become severe if the country fails to effectively manage the resources, said Deputy Director of the Department of Water Resources Management under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) Nguyen Minh Khuyen.

The National Assembly Standing Committee offered opinions on the draft revised Law on Water Resources during their 21st meeting in Hanoi on March 15.

The Government has issued a decree detailing the implementation of the Law on Water Resources, with regulations on granting water resource-related licences.

The Government considered proposals on the building of several laws at its monthly thematic meeting chaired by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on February 2.

Although substantial results have been achieved after nine years of implementing the Law on Water Resources 2012, some shortcomings have been revealed, resulting in ineffective use of water and causing loss of budget revenue, according to Chau Tran Vinh, Director of the Department of Water Resources Management (DWRM) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE).

In the face of growing pressure on water resources in recent years, authorities in Vietnam, including the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), have been striving to ensure the equitable and sustainable management of rivers nationwide.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh has underlined the need to focus on the planning and investigation of water resources across the country, especially in the Mekong Delta region.

Experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have assisted the Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA) in building circulars on water environment management in river basins.
