Indonesia has detected the first cases of more contagious Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of COVID-19 on Bali island.

Most COVID-19 infections related to the Omicron variant of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in Vietnam show no symptoms, according to Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City’s centre for disease control (HCDC) Nguyen Hong Tam.

Ho Chi Minh City’s health department on January 26 announced a total of 18 new Omicron cases, all imported cases that were quarantined on arrival.

Ho Chi Minh City detected five more cases of infection with the Omicron variant on January 6, raising the total number of such infections in the city to 11, according to the HCM City Centre for Disease Control (HCDC).

Vietnam recorded 16,472 cases of COVID-19, including 55 imported ones, during 24 hours from 4pm January 5 to 4pm January 6, according to the Ministry of Health.

The Indonesian government on January 3 decided to shorten the quarantine period for arrivals, including those who were from Omicron-hit countries.

Thailand's tourism industry is once again on the brink due to the impact of entry restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant, although the local COVID-19 situation is basically under control and vaccination progress is accelerated.
