The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta is experiencing increasing erosion, but local authorities are taking steps to mitigate the damage to agriculture and thus to people's lives.

The Mekong Delta is expected to have less flooding than normal this year, according to the Directorate of Water Resources.

Provinces and cities across Vietnam, especially border areas, are stepping up their COVID-19 prevention and control efforts.

The final segments of Cao Lanh bridge in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap were joined at a ceremony held by the Cuu Long Corporation For Investment, Development and Project Management of Infrastructure (Cuu Long CIPM) on September 1.

A recent landslide along the Tien River in Dong Thap province’s Hong Ngu district caused a coffee shop and 2,400 square metres of land to sink into the river.

With its fertile soil and great development potential, Tra Vinh province is expected to become a new centre for trading, aquatic product processing and high-value agriculture of the southern region and the whole country in the near future, said Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

Cao Van Ba, who has lived on the Son Islet in the middle of the Hau River for nearly 50 years, fears that he will have no choice to move to the mainland as erosion is destroying his farmland.

The Tien and Hau rivers in the Mekong Delta have become deeper in recent years instead of having silt build-up like in years past, experts have said.
