The domestic sugar industry should restructure all stages of its production process towards diversifying products to improve competitiveness, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).
The Vietnam Sugarcane and Sugar Association (VSSA) has submitted a plan to relevant agencies for the establishment of a fund for sugar industry development.
Sugar mills nationwide turned out 1.2 million tonnes of sugar in the 2015-2016 sugarcane crop, a fall of 1.4 million tonnes from the previous crop, said the Vietnam Sugarcane and Sugar Association.
The Government has agreed with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to put
sugar import within quota out for tender in 2016 instead of allocating
it in order to ensure transparency.
Sugarcane
farmers in the Mekong Delta are facing losses because of low prices
while authorities and sugar mills are struggling to persuade farmers to
continue growing the crop.
Farmers have begun harvesting sugarcane in the Mekong Delta's Hau Giang
Province, the country's largest producer, but do not expect high profits
since prices are low.
Vietnam produced 1.13 million tonnes of sugar in the 2010-11 sugarcane
seasons, up 21.3 percent against the last season, according to the
Vietnam Sugarcane and Sugar Association.
