The Ministry of Health (MoH) has warned Ho Chi Minh City to stay vigilant against COVID-19 as risks of community transmission of new variants remains considerable.

As the second monkeypox patient was put under quarantine upon her arrival at Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh City, she did not come into contact with anyone in the community, hence a zero risk of community infection, a health official confirmed.

It would not surprise if monkeypox was reported in Vietnam since the country has reopened its borders. A readiness plan is in order, stated an official of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Vietnam.

Although no cases of monkeypox had been recorded in Vietnam as of July 24, the risk of this disease entering the country is very high, according to experts.

Vietnam recorded 15,727 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours as of 4pm on January 27, including 55 imported cases, according to the Ministry of Health.

A person who came in contact with 13 imported cases of COVID-19 Omicron variant was the first recorded case of Omicron in the community in the capital city of Hanoi, according to information announced at the municipal Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control’s meeting on January 26.

Several countries in Southeast Asia continued to witness new records in the numbers of new COVID-19 cases and related deaths on July 10.

Vietnam recorded 94 new COVID-19 infections, including 93 cases of community transmission and one imported, in the 12 hours to 6am on June 30, raising the tally to 16,507, the Ministry of Health said.
