Authorities of the central province of Quang Nam have been working to converting production forest areas on Hon Do mountain in Nui Thanh district into special-use forest areas in order to expand the natural habitat and ensure a suitable living environment for the development of a rare gray-shanked douc langur population.
The central province of Quang Binh has approved the establishment of a strict protection zone on 710ha of special-use forest area to protect 22 Hatinh langur herds in Dong Hoa commune of Tuyen Hoa district.
The central province of Quang Tri, the second-largest timber producer nationwide, is targeting 100,000 ha of forests being granted forest management certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) by 2030; four times higher than the current figure.
The northern province of Tuyen Quang has had more than 25,000 hectares of forest granted sustainable forest management certificates in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards, and is among the localities with the largest planted forest area that has received certification.
Vietnam’s forest area totalled 14.6 million ha in 2019, with a coverage ratio of 41.89 percent, up 117, 925 ha in area and 0.24 percent in coverage against 2018, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The central province of Quang Tri plans to have at least 60,000 hectares of forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) in the next 10 years, tripling the current FSC area.
The coastal forest area in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu has declined in recent years because of climate change and improper fishing which has damaged protective mangrove trees.
