Surveillance cameras to monitor traffic violations will be installed on a trial basis in Hanoi and HCM City by 2020 and nationwide by 2022, according to the Government.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport said that the city’s smart traffic operation centre is being completed and is scheduled to become operational in February.

The HCM City Department of Transport has sought permission to rent 100 more cameras to monitor traffic safety, saying there are no cameras on a number of streets and intersections, which poses difficulties for authorities to tackle traffic problems.

Hanoi’s Traffic Police Division has proposed installing 3,000 additional cameras to supervise traffic, but experts think installing so many cameras at once should be considered carefully.

HCM City’s Party Committee plans to establish a steering committee to provide guidance on developing the southern metropolis into a smart city that would improve the quality of life of its residents.
