The Thai cabinet has endorsed a drought prevention master plan expected to be used as a guideline in dealing with water shortage problems.
The master plan will also set a framework for the development of the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation 2015.
Under a five-year plan, the master plan will address the worsening drought crisis in the country, as the total amount of rain recorded last year was much lower than that of the year before.
The combined amount of water contained in all dams and reservoirs was reportedly much less in 2014 than it was in 2013 by 5.3 billion cubic meters. The huge decline could affect the livelihood of Thai people significantly.
The master plan has been developed to promote the sustainability of water consumption.
It is aimed at preventing and mitigating drought impacts, preparing to handle the emergency situation, implementing relief measures and following up on the situation after the mission has been completed.-VNA
