Chairman of the military-appointed Constitutional Drafting Committee (CDC) Jate Thonavanik said on March 5 that the CDC had proposed a two-year ban from politics for military government members to prevent them retaining power.
The ban would take effect for members of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) once the new constitution is adopted, he said.
Former Army Chief and now Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-O-Cha spoke out against the proposal, saying that in the interim constitution, which came into effect after the coup d’état, CDC members are to be excluded from politics.
Some members of the National Legislative Assembly and National Reform Council (NRC) also opposed the idea, stressing the need to provide substantial reasoning for the ban.
