Bangkok (VNA) – The Thai Raksa Chart Party will obey a command from King Maha Vajiralongkorn blocking the candidacy of Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi for prime minister, it said in a statement issued on February 9.

This is a dramatic reversal of the party, one day after nominating Ubolratana for the position.

“Thai Raksa Chart party complies with the royal command with loyalty to the king and all members of the royal family”, it said in a message to reporters.

Earlier, the princess accepted the nomination to run for prime minister in the March 24 general election under the ticket of the Thai Raksa Chart Party, whose members are relatives of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. However, King Maha Vajiralongkorn voiced his disapproval, saying the nomination is improper and unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, in an Instagram post on February 8, Princess Ubolratana affirmed that she had relinquished all her royal titles and that she now lives as a commoner.

She said she wants to exercise her rights as an ordinary citizen by offering her candidacy for prime minister.-VNA
